The undead are expected to descend upon Bolivar’s Dunnegan Memorial Park Saturday evening when the Downtown Bolivar Association hosts its first Zombie Fun Run/Walk.

DBA’s Susan Sparks said participants are invited “to put on their best zombie attire” and may choose their own pace.

“It will be on the park’s newly completed walking trail,” she said. “You can run it if you want or walk with your kids.”

Sparks said participants can expect a few thrills during the “family event.”

Center Stage Dance Academy will help kick off the night with a performance of “Thriller,” and a few surprises will await participants along the trail.

“It’s going to be slightly scary,” she said.

She said volunteers have “been arts and crafting lots of zombie things,” including “zombie vignettes.”

“Throughout the trail, as you come around the corner, there will be zombie scenes,” she said, adding that walkers and runners need not worry about anything jumping out and scaring them.

In addition to the vignettes, Sparks said there will be a photo opportunity at the park’s log cabin.

“There will be a backdrop with zombies and a city scene,” she said.

Participants may also wish to beef up on their knowledge of the undead prior to Saturday as the event will also feature zombie trivia.

“Zombie trivia questions will be posted throughout the trail,” she said.

Runners and walkers will complete an answer sheet, and those answering correctly will be entered into a drawing for prizes, Sparks said.

The DBA will also distribute commemorative cups and “zombie survival kits” to the first 150 participants in preparation of “the zombie apocalypse,” Sparks said.

Sparks said the DBA has been planning the event for several months. The idea for a zombie run came from a DBA member who had seen “something similar in another community,” she said.

While she said she is hopeful for a good turnout at the new event, Sparks said she is already looking to the fun run/walk’s future.

“This is its first year,” she said. “It will grow.”

Registration will begin at 4:30 p.m. near the park’s main gazebo and the run/walk will kick off at 5. Cost is $2 for ages 9 and under and $5 for 10 and above.

Beginning at 4 p.m., Southwest Missouri Area Health Education Center will also be on hand offering free zombie makeup application. Donations are welcome.
