Just like their custard, the ground was frozen for their groundbreaking on Tuesday, Jan. 31. But that didn’t stop the dirt from flying in preparation for the new Freddy’s coming to Bolivar. According to Warren Lovinger, owner of Freddy’s, the target completion date for the restaurant is late this summer.

Tony Porter, a long-time resident of Bolivar, has recently been named President of the Southern Seed Association, a 103-year-old regional trade organization representing the planting seed industry across 16 southern states from Arizona to Virginia.

Jackie Selle is originally from Bolivar, but now lives in St. Louis County. She was visiting family when she decided to stop by the Polk County Humane Society or PCHS. A domestic, short-haired cat named Molasses caught her eye, and she decided to adopt him. Once home, she renamed him Merlin.

The Bolivar Herald-Free Press is asking the public to nominate a Polk County pillar, an individual in the community who has contributed to the pride and progress of the county. These pillars will be featured in the BH-FP’s yearly Pride and Progress special section to be released in the Wednesday, Mar. 29 newspaper.

Who doesn’t love their fur babies? Nevermind, don’t tell me. It is fortunate that most people do care for and about their 4-legged friends. I am hoping that care goes beyond their own little (or large) fur buddies and can extend to help some that haven’t had the chance to find their forever homes yet.

The February Polk County Community Connections breakfast meeting will feature a review of the results from Polk County’s latest community health assessment. The meeting begins at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, in the community room at Citizens Memorial Hospital, 1500 N. Oakland, Bolivar. A free breakfast is provided.

Wednesday morning, Jan. 25, after the winter storm went through Polk County, the world was a real winter wonderland. According to the National Weather Service, the Bolivar area received 3” of snow. It was a heavy, wet snow that provided lots of fun for area kids sledding as well as the wildlife.
