It was an average day when I stepped outside. Neighbors worked in their yards; one raking and one mowing. They didn’t see me. Cars buzzed down the road and I noticed a lack of friendly Midwestern waves. I drove to a convenience store where other customers stood at the pumps to fill their tanks. One guy stared at his phone like a zombie. A woman watched her pump with a grimace as the cost climbed higher and higher. No eye contacts. No words. It was as if I had become invisible. more

The Christmas tree is a quintessential part of holiday decor. I remember my mom’s trees were always showpieces; our Victorian-styled house had a coinciding evergreen bejeweled in beautiful white lights and delicate ornaments that took her days to arrange just right. She then got ambitious and decided our lodge-style den needed an equally elaborate tree with bears and moose adorning every branch. One was the fun tree, the other was the fancy tree, but both were always the focal points of our home. more

The annual Community Thanksgiving dinner at Open Hearts United Methodist Church was once again a success and helped to bring Thanksgiving to many in the community. They were proud to have served 70 dine-in meals and had between 30-40 to go orders. more
