Lois Alene Murray Smith departed this life on Wednesday, June 26, 2019.

She was born Oct. 4, 1929, the second of twin daughters, to Maurice Murray and Bess Sherman Murray in Walnut Grove, Missouri.

The family moved to Springfield when the twins were in seventh grade.

Alene Murray met Bob Smith at Grant Avenue Baptist Church while he was attending then-Southwest Missouri State College. They were married on May 6, 1951. To this union three children were born.

The family moved to Bolivar in August 1960. Bob took up a teaching position at then-Southwest Baptist College, and a few years later Alene began working in the college library, a position she filled for more than 20 years.

Bob and Alene joined First Baptist Church in Bolivar in 1960 and remained members there until their deaths.

Alene was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dean Smith, in May 2017.

She is survived by her twin sister, Frances Elaine Murray Fleming of Cape Coral, Florida; a daughter, Carol Elaine Wright and husband William; two sons, Robert Smith and wife Carolyn and David Smith and wife Loree; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Alene’s favorite pastimes were reading and crocheting. She had a special fondness for puns and wordplay. She sang in the choir at First Baptist Church in Bolivar for many years, and she helped in the church’s library. Most importantly, Alene was a Christian. Her family and friends will miss her and live in hope of being reunited with her in Heaven.

A funeral for Alene Smith will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at Butler Funeral Home in Bolivar. Visitation will be held the hour prior. Burial services will be at White Chapel Cemetery in Springfield.
