BHFP night at the races

Fans enjoy last year's Bolivar Herald-Free Press Night at the Races at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Bolivar Herald-Free Press readers can receive a discounted rate at Lucas Oil Speedway Saturday, June 15, while also helping to get newspapers in the hands of local students.

Both the Wednesday, June 12, and Saturday, June 15, editions of the BH-FP will contain a coupon for $5 off a general admission ticket. Just clip this coupon and bring it along to the BH-FP table set up at the speedway’s front gate to receive the discount.

A portion of ticket sales will benefit the Bolivar Herald-Free Press’ Newspapers in Education program, which provides more than 800 newspapers weekly to Polk County school districts (Bolivar, Fair Play, Halfway, Humansville, Morrisville and Pleasant Hope) at no cost, according to BH-FP editor and NIE coordinator Jessica Franklin Maull. NIE provides the papers 30 weeks of the school year, totaling over 24,000 newspapers in the hands of local students, she added.

“For the past several years, we have been incredibly fortunate to have a valued partner like Lucas Oil Speedway, who believes in the value of both community journalism and Polk County students,” she said. “While the program is free for schools and students, it does cost money. Without partners, it just wouldn’t be possible.”

In addition to the newspapers, teaching guides and other materials are made available for teachers to use. These additional materials include information that connects the content of the paper to learning standards.

“Through special Newspaper in Education features, as well as regular community news coverage, our newspaper doubles as a local living textbook, which can provide teachers authentic local resources to complement what is being taught in the classroom,” Franklin Maull said. “But perhaps even more importantly, local newspapers create opportunities for civic awareness — and engagement — by connecting students with the news of their communities.”

Studies have consistently shown that students who regularly engage with a newspaper exhibit advanced reading skills and better vocabularies, she said. These students also perform better on tests, participate more, have a stronger curiosity for the world around them, and are more likely to engage in civic activities.
