Dr. Tony Berry will take the helm at Bolivar R-1 School District next year as superintendent. The Bolivar R-1 Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a three-year contract during a special closed session Monday, Feb. 13.
Berry’s three-year contract will begin July 1 with a salary and benefits package totaling $172,033.60, $5,294.43 less than the previous superintendent's full package.
Berry has served as the assistant superintendent at School of the Osage since 2014.
A native of Stockton, Berry graduated from Stockton High School before completing his undergraduate, master’s, specialist and doctorate of educational administration at Southwest Baptist University. He is married to Betsy Cribbs Berry, the daughter of former Bolivar school board member, David Cribbs.
“We are pleased to welcome Tony and his family to the Bolivar School District,” R-1 board president Mona Coleman said. “Tony is no stranger to Bolivar, having earned all of his multiple degrees from Southwest Baptist University. Tony is an outstanding educator with a proven track record for success. The board believes his expertise in leadership and his strong commitment to education will further advance our proud tradition of academic excellence.”
“I am honored and humbled to be working with the fine people of the Bolivar community,” Berry said. “The success of the kids will be our primary goal. Together, as a team, we are going to continue to move forward with tenacity toward this goal. I look forward to earning the trust of the students, parents, faculty, staff and community.”
Six candidates met with the board in interviews, which began Thursday, Feb. 2. Coleman said the district received 31 applications for the post as a result of a nationwide search.
Board members present at the Feb. 13 session were Coleman, J.R. Collins, Bill vanHoornbeek, Paula Hubbert, Gray Nordan, Gary Urich and Chuck Blair.
“The board members are quite confident the district hired the most experienced, well-suited educational leader to help move the district forward,” Coleman said.
Prior to his tenure at School of the Osage, Berry served as activities director at Branson Schools from 2007 to 2014. His career in public education began at Warsaw Schools where he served as a middle school teacher, assistant high school principal, transportation director and elementary principal.
The Berrys have three children, Sadie, Alexis and Kahl.
