Foster Grandparent Program seeks seniors interested in volunteering

Posted

The OACAC Foster Grandparent Program is looking for seniors who are 55 years old or over and are interested in volunteering at schools, child care centers, daycares and/or youth centers in the community.

The program pairs seniors with children who need mentoring/tutoring in the areas of reading, math, and social/emotional skills.

The program is federally funded through Americorps Seniors. It combines the skills of senior citizens with community needs. Volunteers will have the option to mentor/tutor children in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

Benefits for volunteers include a monthly nontaxable stipend, travel reimbursement, paid time off, paid holidays and other leave, a free meal while volunteering monthly in-service training, a yearly recognition event and fellowship through activities.

Volunteers would devote a minimum of seven and a half volunteer hours per week to the program or up to a maximum of 40 hours per week.

Seniors who would like to build relationships and nurture children in the community are encouraged to get involved.

For more information, call the OACAC Foster Grandparent Program at 417-864-3420.
