Health center to host mass vaccination

Posted

The Polk County Health Center will host an upcoming mass vaccination clinic on Friday, Oct. 8, for those seeking first, second and booster doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

Carol Bookhout, community educator with the health center, said the event is open to all eligible residents.

First and second doses will be available for those ages 12 and older, while the booster doses are for those 18 and older, she said.

“It must be 6 months post the second Pfizer dose to receive the booster,” Bookhout said.

Online registration for the event is required, she said.

More about the Pfizer booster

According to Bookhout, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that people ages 65 and older and adults ages 50 to 64 with underlying medical conditions should get a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Residents ages 18 and older living in long term care settings also should get a Pfizer booster shot.

Per the CDC, those ages 18 to 49 with underlying medical conditions may get a Pfizer booster shot based on their individual benefits and risks, Bookhout said.

Also, people ages 18 to 64 at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional settings may get a booster shot.

Occupations at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission include front line essential workers and health care workers, as previously detailed by the CDC, Bookhout said.  Qualifying jobs include the following:

  • First responders (healthcare workers, firefighters, police, congregate care staff)
  • Education staff (teachers, support staff, daycare workers)
  • Food and agriculture workers
  • Manufacturing workers
  • Corrections workers
  • U.S. Postal Service workers
  • Public transit workers
  • Grocery store workers.
