Polk County Fair announce Pie Contest rules

Posted

The Polk County Fair’s Pie Contest will take place on Saturday, June 17. The pies will need to be delivered to the youth building at the Polk County Fairgrounds between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., with judging to follow at 2 p.m.

Pie categories for youth and open competitions include custard/pudding/cream pies, fruit/nut pies, and cobblers.

Youth exhibitors are ages 17 and under. Open exhibitors are 18 and older.

Only one entry per category per exhibitor is allowed. Names are not to be displayed on the entries. Entries will be assigned a number at registration.

Pie crust and filling must be made from scratch and the recipe must be entered with the pie or cobbler. Again, the name must not be on the recipe card or pie/cobbler.

All pies and cobblers must be baked in an 8" or 9" disposable pan. Winning pies will be auctioned, and pans will not be returned to the pie owner.

Judging will begin at 2 p.m. and is not open to the public. Our judges' decision will be final. Cash prizes are awarded for the top three pies in each category, and there will be a grand prize for the overall highest scoring pie out of all pies entered.

The top three youth and top three open pies will be auctioned Saturday evening around 6 p.m. at the dinner. All proceeds go to the Polk County Fair Association. The remaining pies and cobblers will be sold by the slice at the dinner with proceeds going to the Polk County Fair Association.

Judging criteria:

  • Appearance (evenly cooked, edges uniformly done, additional effort such as lattice).
  • Crust (flaky, uniformly cooked, not doughy, etc).
  • Filling (removes easily from pan, evenly cooked).
  • Overall taste (so good you would eat the whole thing)

For questions or to pre-register, contact Miki Dahlberg at 417-399-4195 or the Polk County Extension Office at 417-326-4916.
