There is just something about a turtle. Maybe it’s the way they move with such dogged determination or the low-stress lives they seem to lead. Perhaps it’s how they lock themselves away when things are unpleasant and simply shut the world out until they can cope again. The Southwest Baptist Bearcats competed in the GLVC Championship this past weekend, with the women finishing in second place and the men finishing in fouth place. Each team had significant improvement from the year prior, with the women earning their most points in GLVC history. The Bearcats owned the track portion of the Championship with the women winning gold in six out of the 12 track events. The whole team also swept the GLVC Track Athlete of the Year award, winning it on both the women's and men’s side. more
The Sew ‘n’ Sew Quilt Guild will meet Friday, May 17, at United Methodist Church, 105 E. Division Street. Please come to the east entrance into the Fellowship Hall. Social time begins at 9:30 a.m. with the program starting at 10 a.m. and the meeting to follow at 11 a.m. The program this month will be “The Perfect ¼ inch and The Perfect Prairie Points,” by Georgia Highley. All those interested in quilting are welcome. more

Polk County Democrats will meet Monday May 20, at Smith's Restaurant. Dinner is optional at 5:30 p.m. with the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. We will be discussing several items on the agenda. Saturday, May 4, the 11th Annual Citizens Memorial Heroes for Hospice Race had more than 400 participants, despite the threat of bad weather. The race is presented by Craig Lehman Shelter Insurance and sported a Star Wars theme this year.  more
