PCHS decreases cost of adult dog adoptions through July 16

Posted

Polk County Humane Society (PCHS) is reducing the cost of adoption fees to half the original price for adult dogs during its Summer Lovin’ Adoption event.

Adoption fees for adult dogs — dogs over 6 months old — during the event will drop from $175 to $87.50. This special opportunity lasts through Sunday, July 16.

The funds for this event were made available through a $2,625 Petfinder Foundation grant, as sponsored by Kia. PCHS will use grant funds to cover half the adoption fees of 30 adult dogs.

“We are very excited to have received the grant from Petfinder for the second year in a row,” says Laura Persinger, shelter manager at PCHS. “We are offering 1/2 off adoption fees for adult dogs, which is exciting as adult dogs are often overlooked next to puppies. We will also be at both PetSmarts in Springfield this week. The one on Glenstone will have PCHS cats and kittens, and we will be at the PetSmart on Campbell for a few days this week with dogs. We are hoping to get a lot of adoptions this week! We have great dogs and cats looking for their forever homes!”

The Summer Lovin’ Adoption event corresponds with the PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week. Dogs and puppies from PCHS will be available at the PetSmart on Campbell Ave. in Springfield from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, July 14 and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 15.

PCHS is also having a week-long AOGO (Adopt One, Get One at ½ Price) event for cats and kittens at the shelter and at the PetSmart Adoption Center on Glenstone Ave. in Springfield, allowing customers to buy two animals — one for half the original price.

Denni McColm, treasurer and shelter director at PCGS, says that 974 pets were adopted from the humane society in 2022. This year, 451 adoptions have taken place so far.

“Currently, PCHS has a total of 170 pets in our care,” says McColm. “A breakdown: We have 66 dogs and puppies in our care. Thirty-three of them are at the Humane Society, and 33 are in foster homes. Thirty-three are adults, and 33 are less than 6 months old. We also have 104 cats and kittens in our care. Forty-five are at the Humane Society, and 59 are in foster homes. Thirty-five of those are adult cats, and 69 are kittens under 6 months old.”

All pets have been dewormed, spayed or neutered; have received age-appropriate vaccinations; and have been treated for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. Dogs over 8 months of age are microchipped and tested for heartworm infection.
