The 2024 tennis Lady Liberators have been setting goals and checking them off one-by-one this season. Earlier this month, they earned a conference championship title and then secured berths for two doubles teams in the individual State tournament. In the last week they checked off two more. The Lady Liberators are now heading to the Final Four after claiming an impressive fifth straight district title last week with a 5-3 upset over top seed Carl Junction followed this week by a 5-1 state quarterfinal win over Savannah.

The Polk County Democrats will be meeting at Flat Creek Restaurant in Bolivar for their Oct. 21 meeting. Here’s a movie that certainly surpassed expectations. The low-budget “Terrifier” franchise is not usually one that makes big bucks. The first film from 2016 made less than $1 million. The second, in the glorious year for horror that was 2022, was lucky to pass $10 million. Now comes a third entry that not only made more than the other two movies combined in its opening weekend with $18 million, it took the #1 spot at the domestic box office.

This Nov. 11, the Polk County Genealogical Society (PCGS) will be honoring Veterans with a display of carnations on the front steps of their building. Individuals will have the opportunity to purchase a carnation to honor a veteran. A card will be attached to the carnation with the veteran’s name and service information. Then PCGS volunteers will place the carnations on the steps of the PCGS Research Facility early on Nov. 11. Any veteran whether living or deceased may be honored.
