The DAR (National Society Daughters of the American Revolution) was founded in 1890; membership is for women who can trace lineage to someone who supported American independence during the Revolutionary War.
One of their annual observances is “Bells Across America,” which is part of Constitution Week, Spet. 17-23, the week surrounding the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
DAR chapters across the nation ring bells at 3 p.m. on Sept. 17, matching the time when the Constitution was signed in Philadelphia in 1787. The bell-ringing is accompanied by readings of the Constitution.
