The absentee ballots for the April General Municipal Election will be ready for voting on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025. The Polk County Clerk’s office will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, and open through the lunch hour for absentee voting. Those casting a ballot by mail must make sure their written and signed request states the reason for voting absentee and an address to which the ballot should be mailed. Those requesting ballots by mail must make sure their written request for a ballot arrives at the County Clerk’s office by 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2025. The deadline for casting an absentee ballot in person at the County Clerk’s office is 5 p.m. the day before the election, Monday, April 7, 2025. The County Clerk’s office will also be open for absentee voting on Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 8 a.m. to noon. more

A total of 20 youth from the Bolivar Home School group participated in a 3-class series titled “Life After High School.” The Objective of the class was to assist the youth in identifying and aspiring to reach their personal postsecondary goals, based on their strengths and values, and to expand their accessibility to the paths leading to such goals. The group of teens explored how life choices, education and jobs are all tied together. Discussions focused on life choices including careers, college, housing, transportation and food; selecting a career versus what salary do I need (trade schools are good too); and what happened to my paycheck (taxes, insurance and more). more

The Polk County Democrats will host their meeting on Feb. 17 at Basil & Bourbon at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is optional for those who want to eat and fellowship before the meeting at 5:15 p.m. The agenda will include updates on legislative activities, local charitable activities, and setting our goals for the year. more
The local chapter of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association will meet Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 9 a.m. at Brenda‘s Café on Broadway in Bolivar. Any retired school personnel are welcome and encouraged to attend. This includes support staff as well as teachers and can be from any school district. Breakfast will be available for purchase if desired. Kermit Hargis from Polk County Health Center will be presenting a program called Ready in Three which is a three step process to preparing for a large emergency or disaster. The Lady Liberators made their mark in BHS swimming history as they closed the 2024-25 season with two competitive days in the pool at the Southwest Missouri Championships Feb. 7 and 8. By the end of the weekend, BHS Varsity swimmers would have a new 200 Medley Relay school record, the most individuals in program history qualifying for SWMO finals, the best team finish and most points scored at SWMO finals in program history, and come a fraction of a second off another school record in the 400 Free Relay. Additionally, one relay and five individual medals earned in JV competition would become a BHS all-time best for the SWMO JV meet. more

Darrell and LaDonna Shirey of Humansville, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday, Feb. 14. Darrell and LaDonna met at Robert Brothers Sale Barn in Bolivar where Darrell worked as a young man. They were married on Feb. 14, 1975. They have both been active in church at First Christian Church throughout their years together. Darrell retired from Hiland Dairy, they also both worked at Citizens Memorial Hospital where LaDonna retired. Darrell and LaDonna are blessed with three children and their spouses and three grandchildren. more
