The news on television is depressing. Social media is mainly things that do nothing but put me in a bad mood. There are price increases, shortages, strikes, protests, politics, COVID-19, flu season, and more. The outdoors is calling me to practice nature therapy to escape all that.

Each year during the holiday season, several businesses around Bolivar and in Polk County set up an angel tree for Share Your Christmas. On each angel is a request from a child. These requests are taken during signups for the Share Your Christmas program sponsored by Polk County Christian Social Ministries. It has become a family tradition for families to choose an angel, or angels. Then they shop for the gift listed on the angel. Gifts are to be returned to the service desk in the store where the angel was chosen. The gifts will be collected and distributed to the age group chairmen who will then construct a gift bag for each child.

Toward the end of the 19th century, a feud between two scientists advanced the field of Paleontology. O.C. Marsh and E.D. Cope tried to sabotage each other for almost three decades. The feud began in 1868 when Marsh publicly humiliated Cope for incorrectly constructing a dinosaur skeleton. Their skirmish included publishing slanderous articles and selling tawdry information to journalists about each other, stealing and destroying fossils, and planting spies on the other’s job sites - among other things. Even in death, Cope left behind a challenge for Marsh: measuring their cranial circumferences to see whose brain was bigger - Marsh declined. Due to their desire to outdo each other, they discovered over 130 new dinosaur species, including Triceratops, Brontosaurus, and Stegosaurus.
