JEFFERSON CITY, MO —Governor Mike Parson proclaimed October as “Let’s Talk Month.” This proclamation seeks to raise awareness of the importance of open, honest and ongoing communication with youth about all aspects of health and encouraging lifelong healthy practices. To support this endeavor, the Adolescent and School Health Program within the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) is sharing information about resources to help make these conversations a bit easier.

The Polk County Democrats will be meeting at Flat Creek Restaurant in Bolivar for their Oct. 21 meeting. Dinner is optional at 5:30 p.m. with the meeting following at 6:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be Matt Patterson, Missouri Democratic Party Executive Director. He was unable to attend our last meeting due to illness and is excited to join us for our October meeting. Matt will present the latest news of all Democratic candidates across the state and where they are in the campaigns and how to volunteer.

Here’s a movie that certainly surpassed expectations. The low-budget “Terrifier” franchise is not usually one that makes big bucks. The first film from 2016 made less than $1 million. The second, in the glorious year for horror that was 2022, was lucky to pass $10 million. Now comes a third entry that not only made more than the other two movies combined in its opening weekend with $18 million, it took the #1 spot at the domestic box office.

This Nov. 11, the Polk County Genealogical Society (PCGS) will be honoring Veterans with a display of carnations on the front steps of their building. Individuals will have the opportunity to purchase a carnation to honor a veteran. A card will be attached to the carnation with the veteran’s name and service information. Then PCGS volunteers will place the carnations on the steps of the PCGS Research Facility early on Nov. 11. Any veteran whether living or deceased may be honored.

Friday afternoon, Oct. 11, the SBU Women’s soccer team started off their road weekend with another conference matchup. They faced Quincy University and came away with a 1-0 win, defeating the hawks for the first time since 2014.

Protect The Harvest will cease operations effective Oct. 31, 2024, citing ongoing funding challenges that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization was created in 2011 as a non-profit educational and advocacy effort to promote and defend American farmers and ranchers, improve food security, protect property rights, ensure animal welfare, and support outdoor sports such as hunting and fishing. Protect The Harvest has focused on informing stakeholders about important issues, protecting against a myriad of ongoing threats and responding when appropriate.
