In their last two sessions, the Bolivar Board of Aldermen has failed to sign the street light renewal contract between the City of Bolivar and Liberty Utilities, asking to hear from a representative from the company to clarify the details before signing. During a special session on October 2, aldermen got their chance to discuss the contract with Liberty representatives including Jordan Bollinger, Senior Manager of Key Accounts; Chris Schaffer, Senior Manager of Construction Planning; Diana Carter, Director of Legal Services and Charlie Evans, Director of Rates and Regulatory. Two aldermen, Jonathon Moores and Justin Ballard were absent. Each of the aldermen present spoke out in the meeting at least once. Various aldermen relayed messages they had received from their constituents concerning their feelings about Liberty during the meeting. more
This November 11, the Polk County Genealogical Society (PCGS) will be honoring Veterans with a display of carnations on the front steps of their building. Individuals will have the opportunity to purchase a carnation to honor a veteran. A card will be attached to the carnation with the veteran’s name and service information. Then PCGS volunteers will place the carnations on the steps of the PCGS Research Facility early on November 11. Any veteran whether living or deceased may be honored. more

The Bolivar City Fire Department is inviting the public to a traditional “wet down, push in” ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, to celebrate the department’s new fire engine and officially put the apparatus into service. more

Ed Kurtz is known throughout the Bolivar community as a successful architect, but if you ask students who have gone through Bolivar Primary School, they know him as Johnny Appleseed. For 30 years, Kurtz has donned a pot on his head and a cheerful smile to bring the story of Johnny Appleseed to life for first graders at Bolivar Primary School. Every September 26th — Johnny Appleseed’s birthday — students eagerly await Kurtz’s visit, where history, science, and inspiration come together for learning. more
