The annual Halfway Antique-Farm Stock-Classic Tractor Pull will be held on Saturday, July 12, at the Lions Club grounds in Halfway. Weigh in starts at 1 p.m. with the first class of tractors pulling at 6 p.m. All proceeds go towards community projects and facility maintenance. Trophies will be presented to the top four finishers in each class. Admission is $5 per person, 10 and under free. Bring your lawn chairs! Recently, I was thinking about the front porch at the old farmhouse where I grew up. One of the things I remembered was the big front porch. We spent lots of time there when I was a kid. There was no air conditioning back then. During the summer we spent time out there at the end of the day after chores were done.

Erika Deitch Schwartz will be the speaker at the July 3 meeting of Polk County Genealogical Society. Schwartz was born in 1944 in Nazi-occupied Hungary. She and her mother were the sole survivors of her mother’s entire family. Schwartz will speak about her family and the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis. She will speak of the individuality of these people who loved, and were loved, by people who are still alive. This isn’t ancient history and her closing message of hope…that our lives don’t have to be defined by our circumstances…has resonated with many who have heard her speak.
