Planning has begun for the sixth annual Back-to-School Extravaganza.

The event is set for 8:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, on the Bolivar High School campus.

Each year, the extravaganza — sponsored by Bolivar’s Open Hearts United Methodist Church — brings together churches, businesses, organizations and individuals to provide backpacks, school supplies, hygiene products, hair cuts and more to Polk County K-12 students free of charge.

Last year, around 600 youth were served at the event, according to organizer Kathy Drake.

Its success is dependent on community support, Drake said. That support includes both donations and volunteer effort.

“This event is made possible by the generous donations received from the community,” she told the BH-FP via email.

Anyone wishing to donate supplies or cash or to volunteer with the event is asked to call the church at 326-4885.
