The Polk County Humane Society (PCHS) has had a busy summer so far in 2025.
They found themselves one of the main attractions at the Boot Country Craft Show this past weekend, with a gaggle of people stopping to cuddle one of their adorable puppies. The event was an overall success, with the organization bringing in $350 from the event’s raffle.
More much-needed money will be coming their way from a couple of grants.
The Jason Heigl Foundation, an organization co-founded by actress Katherine Heigl, has donated $7,600 to PCHS. This money will go toward spaying/neutering dogs and cats. PCHS is also using some of these funds to offer free rabies vaccinations.
Through July, dog spays/neuters are being done at All Creatures Animal Clinic, Animal Care Clinic, and Bolivar Pet Hospital. Cats are neutered/spayed at Sedalia Spay and Neuter Clinic, with the Humane Society providing transportation to and from the clinic. These veterinarians have lowered the rates so PCHS can afford the surgeries with the awarded grant money.
PCHS is also receiving the Petfinder Kia grant again this year. This money allows them to reduce their adoption fees by 75% on select animals that have been at the facility for over six months. One of the adoptable dogs, Luna Bear, has been there for three years!
Adoption fees have been waived at the City of Bolivar Pound through July, and they could definitely use some loving homes for their furry friends. PCHS is teaming with the pound to extend those free spay/neuters to the dogs adopted there. This means you can adopt a dog and get it fixed at no cost to you.
Both the pound and the Humane Society are stretched thin as their facilities are filled to capacity. Large dogs are especially in need of homes, so if you have space in your heart (and in your house), you can adopt a pet that will provide unwavering love and loyalty. The best gift God gave to man came with four legs and fur.
