City of Bolivar to celebrate 250th anniversary of United States' independence with time capsule, lecture series

Posted

In honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this Fourth of July, the City of Bolivar is partnering with Butler Funeral Home to place a monument and time capsule in Neuhart Park. The community will be instructed to open the time capsule in 50 years, or 2076.

The City is seeking contributions from local businesses and organizations to include in the time capsule. Organizers hope to focus on pride in our nation but also relate all the things that make Bolivar unique and wonderful in this given moment.

If community members are interested in contributing an item, please contact Thomas Relford at trelford@bolivar.mo.us, Jill Way at jway@bolivar.mo.us, or call City Hall at 417-326-2489.

The deadline to collect items is Friday, June 12.

The City will host a dedication ceremony for the time capsule at 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 30, at Neuhart Park. The community is invited and encouraged to attend.

Following the time capsule dedication ceremony, the City will also host the first installment of a special two-part lecture series on the Declaration of Independence presented by local historian Coyle Neal.

Neal will speak about the history of the Declaration of Independence at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 30, and 7 p.m., Thursday, July 2, at Bolivar City Hall. The community is encouraged to attend both installments to learn more about the history of our nation's founding. Light refreshments will be provided.

Watch the City of Bolivar Facebook page and website at www.Bolivar.Mo.Us for updates on these events and information on more ways the City plans to celebrate this special moment in our nation's history with the community.
