Across the U.S., interest in cooking and testing out new recipes in the kitchen have risen dramatically in recent years. The fire service says it's time to see a similar increase in interest in preventing kitchen fires, and that's why the theme for Fire Prevention Week this year is "Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire prevention."

On Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office received information stating Jess Rush, a felon on parole, possessed a black, semi-automatic, 9mm pistol in Polk County, Missouri. Jess Rush is on parole after receiving a life sentence for the kidnapping and murder of Trudy Darby in Camden County in 1991.
